Palin looks dumb, McCain campaign quietly covers up her political mess

The past two weeks have been nothing but newsworthy soundbites, bailout drama, debate debacle and political maneuvers. Amongst all this news Sarah Palin, the little politician that could, was devoured by the media every time she opened her mouth- which has been disturbingly frequent as of late. Charlie Gibson, Katie Couric and even a Temple University grad student all unraveled her knack for, well, sounding uneducated and uninformed. SNL has had a hell of a time using her real life bloopers for their skits. All in all it's a funny situation. Even hardcore conservatives who once supported Palin are all about telling her to step down for the sake of the country. But come election, which is only a few short weeks away, is anyone honestly going to vote for or against her because of her unintelligible gibberish? I'd venture a guess and say no- I mean, this is a country that elected President Bush. Twice.

Poking fun at Sarah Palin has become a favorite pasttime for many, myself included. It's so...easy. I started thinking though, since Palin started opening her mouth with unscripted talks at an alarming frequency everyone has seemed to have forgotten about all of her negligent actions as Mayor and as Governor. What happened with Troopergate? Why are we not demanding that a verdict be reached sooner than later? A few weeks ago a story broke about how she charged per diem for spending hundreds of nights in her own Alaskan home and took her children and husband frequently on business trips for which the state paid. I haven't heard anything else about it since then. The people are not asking the obvious- why was Governor Palin charging a per diem to stay in her own home? Why did the state pay for her children and husband to attend business trips? Couldn't the money have been better spent on education or health care? Nobody is talking about the astounding $19 million debt Palin left the city of Wasilla, a town with no long term debt previous to her tenure as mayor. These are real issues that need to be considered in this election and they disappeared in the night as suddenly as the spunky Alaskan Governor emerged on the national political radar.

Come November will Americans be well versed on these "Palin issues" or will their focus remain on her manner of speaking, which will surely be spinned as endearing in the next few weeks and compared to as a 'main street' person, wining her rural votes across the country? Perhaps the McCain is smarter than we all thought. While Palin becomes increasingly known as a ditz, all of the pertinent issues in this election are quietly swept under the rug by the campaign. All jokes aside, we need to focus on the issues that have raised questions about her integrity and ability to lead this great nation and we need to take these questions to her and the McCain campaign. This is our election, why are we so silent?

What's in a pic

Ok, you guys, I decided to start a new post called "What's in a pic". Give me an outrageous comment of what a person (or people) are thinking in the picture. I'll always include mine under the pic. Get your creative juices flowing- I can't wait to see what you come up with!
Oh my gawd you guys, I DID it! This is like, totally, my bestest day EVER!

Vote Duff for VP!

Couric owns Palin!

No wonder the McCain campaign doesn't want her to speak to reporters...

4:50 is of particular interest to me. Palin gets owned.

My favorite part of the transcript:

Couric: You've said, quote, "John McCain will reform the way Wall Street does business." Other than supporting stricter regulations of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac two years ago, can you give us any more example of his leading the charge for more oversight?

Palin: I think that the example that you just cited, with his warnings two years ago about Fannie and Freddie - that, that's paramount. That's more than a heck of a lot of other senators and representatives did for us.

Couric: But he's been in Congress for 26 years. He's been chairman of the powerful Commerce Committee. And he has almost always sided with less regulation, not more.

Palin: He's also known as the maverick though, taking shots from his own party, and certainly taking shots from the other party. Trying to get people to understand what he's been talking about - the need to reform government.

Couric: But can you give me any other concrete examples? Because I know you've said Barack Obama is a lot of talk and no action. Can you give me any other examples in his 26 years of John McCain truly taking a stand on this?

Palin: I can give you examples of things that John McCain has done, that has shown his foresight, his pragmatism, and his leadership abilities. And that is what America needs today.

Couric: I'm just going to ask you one more time - not to belabor the point. Specific examples in his 26 years of pushing for more regulation.

Palin: I'll try to find you some and I'll bring them to you.

...and people still want to vote for her and McCain?

Don't get raped in Alaska- Sarah Palin will turn a blind eye

You’ve just gone through the most brutal and emotionally damaging moment of your life. Unlike many other victims, you gather up enough courage to go to the police to report this act of degradation. Sitting in the cold steel chair at the ER you clench your teeth to hold back tears. The doctor dismisses you, a sad look of pity in her eyes. You go back home and try to make your life normal again, before someone took advantage of your body. You’re sitting at home, perhaps baking cookies with your kids and spouse when the mail man delivers your Saturday morning mail. Wiping your hands on your apron you flip through the mail but halt suddenly at an ominous white envelope with a return police address. Tearing the letter open you are bombarded with figures as you suddenly realize that it is an invoice. An invoice for your rape kit. The police station, the very one you went to for help for the vicious crime committed against you, those same people are charging you for helping to gather evidence against the individual who raped you. Once again you find yourself a victim, this time your friendly police station is the perpetrator.

Don’t think this happens? Think again. When Sarah Palin was mayor of Wasilla the town charged individuals for their rape kits, a kit used to collect evidence from a rape victim. The chief of police of Wasilla was an adamant supporter of charging rape victims for the kits claiming it would affect their budget if the city paid for it. Statistics show that the rape rate in Alaska is 2 ½ times more than the national average. In a way, the chief of police was profiting from the rape of his citizens- other than a few towns that had the same policy as Wasilla, all other towns refuse to let rape victims pay for their kits and thus take the funds out of their own budget for this cause.

The chief of police fought a state law requiring cities to provide funds for the rape kits. It is difficult to believe that Sarah Palin did not know that this was occurring in her town. How could any woman, or any man for that matter, support the practice of charging victims for their rape kits. That’s a slap in the face, more degradation after an already humiliating and emotionally damaging act. It is unknown exactly how many individuals do not report rape each year but the estimations are staggering. Instead of providing hope and someone to turn to, the city of Wasilla victimized and alienated those who reported rape. Rape is a serious crime but how many people are going to report a rape if they know they have to pay for the kit- an examination that cost up to thousands of dollars? Where were you to defend these women (and men)? How could you let this practice occur in your town for years when you were mayor? Sarah Palin, do you care more about money than the welfare of rape victims?

Suppression of dissident voices is the first step towards totalitarianism

As an American, I can claim to live in a democracy where I enjoy the right to freedom. I am blessed to be a citizen of a nation that does not try to extinguish my freedom of speech or religion. However, these freedoms come as a mixed blessing in disguise with Governor Sarah Palin. In fact, this democracy that I enjoy so much may soon be a thing of the past.

Recently, on September 10th 2008, the Alaska Republican Party (ARP) hosted a welcome home rally for Governor Palin. The rally was open to the public; however organizers asked only those who support Palin and McCain to attend. “If you don’t, we’re encouraging you not to come,” party spokesmen McHugh Pierre said. People were prohibited to take water bottles or signs into the rally, however, in preparation of the rally supporters of all ages were “invited to help make signs from 5-7pm". I realize that it was the ARP that asked those who did not support Governor Palin not to come to the rally but this sort of suppression behavior seems to be following Palin everywhere. Who's to blame?

I’m not going to let Governor Palin get off that easily. There have been several cases where Palin has abused her power to intimidate and fire those whose opinions and motivations differ from that of her own agenda. Take for instance Mary Ellen Emmons, the city librarian of Wasilla, who was accosted by Sarah Palin when she first became mayor. Mayor Palin inquired as to whether Mary Emmons would consent to censoring library books if she were asked to do so. Mary Emmons expressed complete disdain for the idea. A few months later Emmons received a letter from Mayor Palin informing her that she was going to be fired because Palin felt that she did not fully support her. The censorship issue was not mentioned in the letter. However, after much outcry and support over Emmons, Palin relented, allowing her to keep her job.

In 1997, a group called the Concerned Citizens for Wasilla cried for the recall of Mayor Sarah Palin. The group of 60 + Wasilla residents were concerned about the direction she had taken since acquiring the mayoral office. They were also outraged with her firing of Police Chief Irl Stambaugh. In 1996 when Palin ran for mayor against John Stein, who had been mayor for 9 years, Stambaugh along with four other city department heads wrote to the local paper in response to a remark by Palin that criticized the current city leadership. The Palin-Stein mayor race was very heated as well as bitter. When Palin was elected mayor the fate of the remaining city department heads was up in the air but became clear shortly after Mayor Palin took office . In 1996, during the same time that librarian Mary Emmons received her notice of being fired, other officials in Wasilla received similiar letters from Mayor Palin for their lack of support to her. Along with Mary Emmons, Irl Stambaugh also received a letter informing him that he was being fired for reasons cited as his "not fully supporting her [Palin's] efforts to govern." The museum director was fired as well, and two of the four remaining department heads quit. When 3 women at the museum were asked to choose between themselves which should be let go, all three women quit. A local newspaper, the Frontiersman, condemned Palin's ideology of the 'we're either with her or against her' attitude and claimed she mistook her mere 616 votes as a "coronation".

On July 11, 2008 Department of Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan was fired for reasons Monegan claimed were personal and vindictive of then Governor Palin. Walt Monegan felt that he had been let go because he had not fired trooper Mike Wooten, who at the time was involved in a messy divorce with Palin's sister. Monegan claims that he had been approached by not only the governor, but also her husband and other aides, concerning the behavior of Wooten. All those involved have denied pressuring Monegan to fire Wooten and Governor Palin has claimed she did not fire Monegan because he refused to fire her ex-brother-in-law. Monegan decided to speak out about his dismissal, "I'm watching the stresses put on everyone I used to work with. And these guys are good people," he said. "This may be one of the few things, one of my last things, to support them. You know, they can't fire me twice." Well said, Monegan, well said! Governor Palin's firing of Walt Monegan is currently under investigation. I hope they return a guilty verdict, but I doubt that will happen. Especially since the McCain campaign has urged Palin's family and friends not to speak to the media and even trained them on proper ways to respond to media inquiries while saying "supportive things" about Governor Palin. Surprise, surprise. Yet another case of suppression of dissident voices when it comes to Governor Palin.

Governor Palin has a long, and very well recorded history of doing away with those who dissent from her views or do not fully support her actions. She issued a gag order, telling department heads that they had to speak with her and get her ok before speaking to reporters. So much for free speech.

I'll leave you with something to ponder: The American Heritage Dictionary defines totalitarianism as "Of, relating to, being, or imposing a form of government in which the political authority exercises absolute and centralized control over all aspects of life, the individual is subordinated to the state, and opposing political and cultural expression is suppressed." As mayor and governor, Palin has shown that she does not hesitate when it comes to suppressing those whose loyalty aka poltical opinion does not fully support hers. Another act of suppresion occurred today in Golden, Colorado where Governor Palin was campaigning as Senator McCain's running mate. Signs that the crowd brought with them were not allowed in but McCain's campaign distributed yellow signs inside. Yet again the voices of critics have been closely monitored and controlled. Do we really want a vice president candidate , one who may someday become president, that restricts our rights to free speech?

She has other very conservative views on abortion and religion, to name a few. Although she has not at this time done anything to control those two issues I have no doubt in my mind that as vice president or god forbid president, Palin would continue her record of suppressing the voices of dissent and will further her own political agenda by controlling the government and we the people, in order to progress her own totalitarian rule.

Could we seriously find ourselves facing this issue if Palin acquires the vice presidency?
Totalitarian regimes were thought to be (under Hitler and Stalin they certainly were) energetic, enthusiastic in an almost religious sense, on the march..

I am an indivdiual who believes in my right to speech. I am simply expressing a dissident voice. I have one question for you, Governor Palin. Will you try to suppress my voice?

America's New Sex Symbol

This just in- Sarah Palin is Governor by day, super hero by night! The site herobuilders.com has cashed in on Palin’s recent popularity by creating not one, but THREE action figure dolls protraying the Alaskan Governor, who recently acquired fame when being chosen as Senator John McCain's Vice Presidential pick for the 2008 elections. To give the site credit, they do have figures of Senator Obama and Senator McCain, as well as Senator Clinton and Condi Rice. There is only one action hero per Clinton and Rice and it is amusing that they are wearing the same outfit- a heavy black coat or cloak with a pale blue conservative top underneath. One of Palin’s action figures also has the same outfit, well…almost. She too is sporting the shabby chic black cloak clothing which is unbuttoned at the neck to halfway down the chest, revealing not the blue shirt that Clinton and Rice wore but a small piece of cloth. While it's still not too revealing, it's not as conservative as the dolls portraying Clinton and Rice. But wait- itt gets worse. The other two remaining Palin dolls are much more degrading. First there is Sarah Palin as a not so conservative Catholic school girl dressed in a short skirt and loosely opened shirt revealing a sexy red bra. The second, and my personal favorite, is Sarah Palin as a superhero. She is wearing a floor length trench coat which is dramatically open and flowing from her body, revealing a short white skirt and risqué black top. Attached to her upper thigh is a handgun harness. She’s dressed to kick ass a la Angelina Jolie style. I wonder what her husband and kids think? Even worse, what do the members of her conservative church think? And the McCain campaign is going to call the action figures a disgrace and demand they be taken off the shelf in three, two, one...

It is obvious that these individuals see Palin as a sex symbol as do many other individuals not only in America but all over the world. And how could you blame them? I’ve currently heard her referenced as a “MILF” (culture reference for ‘Mom I’d like to fuck’) and the recently coined term "VPILF" (Vice President I'd like to fuck) which acquired national recognition during the MTV awards when British comic Russel Brand declared Palin a VILF. I have seen numerous Facebook group sites dedicated to how hot or sexy she is and pictures have popped up all over the web of her scantily clothed in short skirts and skimpy bikins. These pictures however are fake, obviously photoshopped by individuals trying to cause a scandal. Damn, if only they were real! But it is interesting to note that our culture has become fascinated with Governor Palin's "hot" image, as it is one of the most popular searches about her online, according to a recent article in Time magazine.

Oh, and don't forget that she used to compete in beauty pageants and was Miss Wasilla in 1984 and second runner up and Miss Congeniality in the Miss Alaska pageant. I'm taking bets on when Playboy and Maxim will approach her for a cover shoot. Takers, anyone?
A poll today in CNN shows that Sarah Palin is viewed more favorably by males 62%, compared to 53% of females. Also, 57% of males believe she is more qualified to serve as president compared to the mere 45% of females who believe she could run the show in the White House. It is apparent in this election that when it comes to Sarah Palin there is a huge gender gap in rating approvals. We have to ask ourselves why. Is it possible that men favor Governor Palin simply because of her sex status? Is it easier for women than men to claim they dislike her, simply because they do not have to wory about being called a sexist?

At the end of the day I find myself asking, is Sarah Palin America's new sex symbol?

Eenie, Meenie, Miny, MO!

In recent news, Sarah Palin and her daughter couldn't decide which of them should get pregnant so in true political scandal form they flipped a one sided quarter. Surprised? So was Levi Johnston! Poor bastard.
I find the Bristol Palin pregnancy scandal amusing. I mean, who doesn’t? While I agree with Senator Obama that Bristol’s pregnancy should not be used as ammunition politically and does not reflect Governor Palin’s competency in politics, I have to admit that it’s quite hilarious. C’mon, this green kid from the middle of nowhere Alaska knocks up the daughter of the vice presidential candidate during election year- priceless!

The whole issue ties in nicely with Republicans’ pro-life stance. Sarah Palin, mother of a Downs syndrome infant and a pregnant teenage daughter who is keeping her baby and marrying the father (aww, happy endings DO exist!) is now seen as the ultimate poster child for pro-life right. The Republicans love her as do many other Americans who feel they can relate to her. Wow, not only is she a woman but she’s raising a disabled child and her knocked up daughter is keeping her illegitimate unborn baby? I am so going to vote for her! *Sigh* If only President Bush had a handicapped child or promiscuous daughter maybe more Americans would have “related” to him. Oh, wait…

Teenage pregnancies are fun- have you not seen all the media attention it has received in the past few months, what with Jamie Lynn Spears being pregnant and all the teenage pregnancy pacts? While bastard children are fun, I'll leave it to the teenage celebrities and politicians' daughters. Thank god for condoms, birth control and abortion!

**Disclaimer: I myself take pride in being a bastard child. I too do not support abortion although I do feel it is a woman's right to choose. I too come from small town America. I too have family members serving in Iraq. However, I am not falling for the obvious Palin ploy propogated by the McCain campaign. I don't beleive we should vote for a candidate because we can "relate" to them the same way that I do not believe that a candidate's family issues should be used as political propoganda. I don't dislike Governor Palin because her daughter is knocked up and her husband was arrested for a DUI 20 years ago, I dislike her because she is not the proponent of change she claims to be**

I will not sit quietly

For my first post, I thought it would only be appropriate to touch on a subject that has been very dear and influential in my life- books. I grew up in a household where my parents encouraged me to read books often. After dinner we would all scatter throughout the house, each individual clutching a book and heading to his or her favorite reading spot. Soon I became an avid reader, eagerly devouring as many books as I could. I moved from the Nancy Drew books to authors such as Patricia Cornwell and Anne Rule. I won an award in the 6th grade during a reading competition, for reading more books in a year than the entire 1,000+ population of students.

High school was an enlightening period in my life, as I was exposed to authors I had never heard of. I fell in love with the amiable characters in Jane Austen’s books. George Orwell’s account of a totalitarian government in 1984 mesmerized me and to this day remains one of my favorite books. The Scarlet Letter, in all its brilliancy, was risqué and alluring and managed to captivate me with the sad tale of one woman’s indiscretions and the consequences of those actions. Authors such as Charles Darwin and Richard Dawkins fueled my curiosity about science and the world. In college I was introduced to different philosophers and intellectuals, such as the writings of Dante, Plato, Al Farabi, Thomas Aquinas, and Karl Marx. I fell in love with Dan Brown’s Davinci Code and recognized it as a brilliant work of fiction, despite its controversy in our society.

Some authors I agreed with immensely, while others I did not. Some authors captured my attention and sparked my curiosity. However, all authors had something in common- they made me think. Books are beautiful things. They are the creations of the minds of the individuals that wrote them. Beautiful! The saddest thing is that there have been people throughout history who have tried to take away this beauty from us. Some have been successful while others have been met with fierce resistance. By trying to censor books these people want to take away our imaginations and curiosity, our hopes and dreams, our ability to think for ourselves. What they do not know is that they cannot and will not be successful in censoring our books.

We are a society that has grown and flourished immensely- and why? We have progressed as a nation, as a world, because people with dreams and curiosity and aspirations expressed their ideals. If history has taught us anything it is that you cannot successfully oppress a society. If politicians and the government ever try to censor books, to take away my right to read authors who are solely expressing ideas and creativity, I will not sit still and do nothing. I will join a revolution of individuals. Books are an integral part of my life. If it comes to it, I will not sit quietly.

"For only when free men write and speak truth will the exercise of arbitrary power be exposed and opposed."

I was appalled to find out that Governor Sarah Palin, the Republian Vice Presidential candidate, once accosted a librarian in Wasilla, Alaska and asked her how she would react to a request to censor books. The librarian was aghast and expressed her resistance to any actions concerning censorship. A few months after her encounter with then Mayor Palin, the librarian received a letter from Palin informing her that she was being fired because she did not support the mayor. Censorship was not listed as a reason for her being fired. After a large public outcry, Mayor Palin relented her previous statement and allowed the librarian to retain her job.

This story became news again recently as Governor Palin's life and politics are under close scrutiny from both the public and the media. Governor Palin has claimed that her talk with the librarian was "rhetorical" and meant to help her acquaint herself with her county employees. The librarian felt differently. The question on everyone's mind is did Governor Palin seriously consider censoring books from the Wasilla library? A politician eager to censor books is not someone I would ever want to hold an influential public office such as Governor, or even worse- as Vice President. I am eager for new investigative research to surface either confirming or denying that Governor Palin's intent was to indeed censor books from her local library. Unfortunately, as we quite often see in politics, we will probably never know the complete truth. Governor Palin, if it indeed was your intent to censor books from the Wasilla library you should be ashamed of yourself for trying to suppress an individual's quest for knowledge and right to free speech. If it was not your intent to censor the books and you were only asking a "rhetorical" question as you claim, then I sincerely apologize. However, I'm not holding my breath on the latter (and you shouldn't either)!
